Industrial Treatments: CCA-ET
Wolmanized® ET® poles by Cox are CCA treated poles with a refined
hydrocarbon oil emulsion treatment (ET) in the outer layer of the pole,
which is done following the CCA treatment. CCA-ET poles come with a 50 year
warranty that covers their high quality CCA chemical treatment. These
patented ET poles are superior because they combine the more appealing
attributes of both CCA and oil impregnated poles. The ET pole's oil additive
has highly viscous properties that act as a lubricant, which helps to make
the pole much easier for repairs and maintenance to be performed on it due
to its increased climb ability. This increased climb ability has been
verified by numerous studies and trials performed in the field on both
recently erected poles and poles that have been in service for a significant
amount of time. ET poles were the highest rated poles overall in a nine year
evaluation study done by climbers from Carolina Power and Light. The oil's
increased viscosity also helps to make the need for rotation of poles during
storage unnecessary.
Choosing ET poles offers numerous advantages over alternative treatments.
Not only are they less expensive than poles treated with alternative
treatments but the oil retention can also be easily measured and verified by
inspection agencies, which has proven to be a very difficult task with other
additives in the past. They also have the numerous advantages that give CCA
treated poles their extended lifespan, including resistance to fungal decay
and termites because the treatment leaves the wood unavailable as a food
source. CCA-ET poles are safe to handle without any additional precautionary
measures being taken, are clean, have no odor, and will not stain the
surrounding area. They also will not leave any undesirable residue on the
exterior portion of the pole. This is due to CCA's very high chemical
fixation rate which nearly eliminates any preservative migration along the
ground line and makes future remedial treatments unnecessary. CCA poles have
excellent fixation rates because the compounds in the treated wood are
"fixed" inside the product in a "highly insoluble state" and the chemicals
are now very resistant to leaching, which means that they do not migrate or
evaporate. This high fixation rate, coupled with CCA's very low corrosivity
helps to greatly reduce maintenance and upkeep after the pole has been put
in service. CCA poles have been in service for over seventy years now, and
their safety for the environment as well as humans, flora and fauna has been
thoroughly researched and recorded by numerous parties.
ET® poles offer these major benefits:
- RUS (formerly REA) approved and AWPA listed.
- The longevity of CCA-treated wood - resistance to termites and fungal decay for decades.
- Excellent climbing characteristics confirmed by numerous field-climbing trials on both new and aged poles.
- No need for future ground line remedial treatment, since fixation of CCA virtually eliminates preservative migration.
- Low corrosivity - No need to rotate poles during storage because of the emulsion's high viscosity.
- Can be touched and handled without special safety precautions.
- Easier to saw, nail, and drill into than regular CCA treated poles because the emulsion agent acts as a lubricating oil.
- Retention of oil can be readily verified by inspection Agencies - a difficult task with other additives.
Climbing trials show value of ET® poles
Numbers shown below represent the mean scores for climb ability, as given by
linemen following climbing trials. Scores are based on a 1-10 scale, with 10
being easiest to climb.

All poles were installed in 1988. The 9-year evaluation was done by
climbers from Carolina Power & Light; the 14-year evaluation by climbers
from Georgia Power Company; 20-year evaluations by climbers from Snapping
Shoals EMC; Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative, and Energy/United.
